Express Entry

General Process for Express Entry

Express Entry (EE) is an immigration application management system that allows applicants submit their permanent residence application electronically. There are three sub-classes under EE:

In addition, applicants have the option to apply for permanent residence under Provincial Nominee Program (PNP) through EE.

After applicants creating EE online profile, Comprehensive Ranking System (CRS) scores applicants and qualified candidates enter a pool from which employers, province and territories may select immigrates. The IRCC minister regularly announce draws from the pool specifying the minimum CRS points and for which sub-class the draw is. Invitation to apply (ITA) will be issued to the specified sub-class candidates who scores higher or equal to the minimum CRS points, and they have 90 days to submit a complete permanent residence application.

There are a few things that applicants need to keep in mind:

  • Although the three programs in EE are federal immigration programs, applicants’ Quebec work experience is accepted. However, applicants cannot intend to live in Quebec.
  • The EE profile is valid only for 12 months. If the applicant is not invited to apply for PR during the 12 months, a new profile need to be created.
  • There is no fee in creating a profile.
  • After creating the EE profile, applicants can register in Job Bank if they don’t have a job offer.
  • Applicants can apply for EE as well as Provincial Nominee Program.
  • If the applicant has a spouse or common-law partner who will not immigrate to Canada or is a Canadian citizen or permanent resident, the applicant will be scored without a spouse or common-law partner.

Comprehensive Ranking System (CRS)

The CRS assigns points to applicants based on their profile created on EE. It scores the applicant on their core human capital factors, including age, level of education, official language proficiency, and Canadian work experience, and other factors such as foreign work experience, French language proficiency, arranged employment, and Canadian education. The total score is out of 1,200, and the maximum score for core human capital factors is 500 for single applicants and 460 for applicants with a spouse or common law partner.
