Minimum Requirements for Federal Skilled Trades

Federal Skill Trades (FST) program focuses on the skill trade occupations that are in the NOC group 72, 73, 82, 92, 632 and 633. The minimum requirements are

  • Meet the required levels in English or French: CLB 5 in speaking and listening, CLB 4 in reading and writing
  • Have at least 2 years paid full-time work experience (or an equivalent amount of part-time work experience) in a skilled trade within the 5 years before application
  • Meet all job requirements for that skilled trade set out in the NOC (except for needing a certificate)
  • Have a valid job offer (supported by LMIA) of full-time employment with up to two employers for at least 1 year or a certificate of qualification for that skilled trade issued by a Canadian provincial, territorial or federal authority
  • Intent to live outside of Quebec

The work experience does not have to be continuous, but must be acquired after the skill trade certificate is issued.

Skilled Trade NOC groups

Under the FST program, the skilled trade occupations are all skill type B in the NOC.
