Study Permit
A study permit is an important document for international students to be able to study in Canada for more than six months, even if you are holding a passport from a visa-exempt country. If you will study in Canada for 6 months or less, you do not need a study permit, unless the program requires a co-op or internship. However, we recommend our clients to apply for a study permit regardless the length of their study, the benefit of having a valid study permit in this case is
- you can continue studying in Canada if your studying situation changes
- you may be able to work on- or off campus if you are a full-time student registered in a DLI
To apply for a study Permit Outside Canada
You may need the following:
- Valid passport or travel document
- Proof of financial support
- Two photos of yourself
- Acceptance Letter from a Designated Learning Institution (DLI) in Canada (unless a minor is coming to Canada with a parent(s) who has a valid study or work permit)
- Other documents, such as police certificate, medical examination, etc. It depends on your case.
Working while Studying
If you are Studying in Canada, have a valid study permit, and are enrolled in a designated Canadian post-secondary institution (ESL/FSL/General interest/Preparatory programs are not eligible) as a full-time student, you do NOT need a work permit to
- work on campus
- work off campus for 20 hours per week during academic sessions, and
- work off campus full-time during holiday
